Foley & Lardner

Initial project objective:  Assist legal defense of a major corporation sued by the holder of a patent on electronic transaction processing techniques.  The patent holder asserted that the defendant infringed on their patent.  My objective was to build a case demonstrating that the defendant’s use of electronic transaction processing techniques was commonplace in the industry at that time, thereby nullifying the patent’s enforceability.

Challenge:  Patent law, legal definitions, technical and legal research, technical writing, presentations, negotiation.

How I met the challenge:  Thorough research and synthesizing large amounts of seemingly unrelated information from my experience in transaction processing technology at Bell Labs in the 80’s and 90’s into an irrefutable legal defense.  The case was settled to the benefit of the defendant.

Why I left:  Law suit was settled and my engagement completed.
